Leonard Rickhard – one of Norway's most recognised artists – will exhibit paintings and drawings from his entire artistic life during the Film Festival Exhibition in Haugesund Picture Gallery 21 August - 12 September 2010.
Leonard Rickhard (b. 1945) is without doubt one of Norway's most recognised artists. Representing a highly distinct voice in Norwegian contemporary art, through a precise and consistent artistic life Rickhard has for a great number of years constantly produced new episodes within the framework of his ever-in-progress work with painterly issues.
In Norwegian art history Leonard Rickhard in many ways constitutes a category of his own. Even though he has proved to have a persevering and purposeful focus through the years, every exhibition of new work still represents a vital and novel encounter with an artistic body that constantly manages to redefine itself within the framework of his project. Haugesund Art Society, Haugesund Picture Gallery and the Norwegian Film Festival are very pleased to be able to present one of Norway's foremost painters as the 2010 Festival Artist.
Coloristically, Rickhard's paintings are quiet and contemplative compositions. In his universe, Norwegian nature meets a number of constantly recurring elements – abandoned war barracks, agricultural machines or wires forming abstract patterns in the image. The references to World War II or personal memories are never sentimental. On the contrary, his images are marked by an undefinable smouldering eeriness. We find ourselves in an unnervingly quiet atmosphere where we sense that something has taken place or that something is just about to happen. It is as if the carefully chosen objects represent industrial remains existing in a very special communion with nature. We seldom see people interacting in these landscapes. The interplay between nature and the human-made objects seems rather to speak in a language of their own, independent of our presence.
For the exhibition in Haugesund, Rickhard has selected paintings and drawings from his entire artistic life.
Leonard Rickhard works and lives in Arendal. Previous solo exhibitions include Haugar Vestfold Art Museum (2008), Sørlandets Art Museum (2005), the National Gallery (2004), Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (2001), Lillehammer Art Museum (1996) and The Bergen International Festival Exhibition 2009.
