Bjørn Carlsen is this year's Festival Artist
Bjørn Carlsen, one of Norway's leading pictorial artists, has been selected as this year's Festival Artist. The festival exhibition will take place at Haugesund Picture Gallery 18 August - 23 September. Bjørn Carlsen (b.1945) is one of his generation's most original painters, often with subjects from the world of imagination and nightmarish dreams. Since his 1972 debut he has consistently been one of Norway's leading pictorial artists. Early on he proved to have a rare coloristic talent. His work is marked by a powerful and contrast-rich use of colour, capable of expressing strong emotional forces. Carlsen's formal language is expressionist, with works that primarily express a painterly interpretation of inner emotions and experiences. It was Edvard Munch's art that opened up his interest in art and led him to decide to become an artist. Right from the outset he has also been striving for a simplified figurative expression that is both engaging and challenging. As for his subjects, Carlsen does not shy away from exploring the big and existential problems. His pictures can be satirical as well as humorous and critical of society. He chooses subjects that describe human isolation, loneliness and oppression in modern society. Carlsen's pictures seem to be full of paradoxes and contradictions. One who looks for too precise answers will soon find that his pictures remain secretive and ambiguous. Carlsen is a painter for the questioning mind.
