Today the Nordic film market New Nordic Films opens for the 18th time in Haugesund. The Norwegian International Film Festival's Nordic section gather 343 professionals from 28 nations to watch films, discuss films, buy films and enter agreements about new film projects.
- It will be especially nice to greet those who have come from faraway places, Programme Director of New Nordic Films, Gyda Velvin Myklebust, says - In addition to the usual strong showing from Europe, this year we have visitors from Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, South Korea, Russia and USA, she tells us.
New Nordic Films follows a film through its entire production life – from script to finished film. Writers pitch their scripts to producers. Directors and producers enter agreements for the financing of new films. Film buyers can watch clips from films in production and finished films will have their very first screenings here, to international distributors and film festivals that will bring them out in the world.
- It's great to observe projects that saw their modest beginnings during New Nordic Films return as finished films, Gyda Velvin Myklebust says. - Three of the films in our Works in Progress section last year now come back as market films. Three of the projects that were presented during last year's Co-production market return in this year's Works in Progress. We have also learnt that some of the others have completed their financing and are entering production, Gyda Velvin Myklebust says.
In addition to a large and diverse film programme, with directors like Jan Troell, Bille August, Sara Johnsen and Mika Kaurismäki, the Programme Director can tell us about an exciting choice of Works in Progress, and strong projects in the co-production market from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Germany, Canada, the UK, Poland and Estonia. - Out of more than 60 applications for participation in the co-production market that we received this year, we have selected 16 highly interesting projects. All of the producers are experienced and have made feature films before, and several have previously been «Producers on the Move» in Cannes, Gyda Velvin Myklebust says.
New Nordic Films also has a diverse seminar programme. Most of them are open to festivalgoers outside New Nordic Films.
