Despite cinema’s great tradition of “road movies”, this is strangely enough the first adaptation of the classic Jack Kerouac autobiographical novel of existentialism and finding one’s own voice.
The film revolves around two representatives of the famous Beat Generation, Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty. Criss-crossing America in seemingly never-ending travels they meet up with a strange collection of drifters, free-thinkers and eccentrics. But at the film’s core is the (not a little homoerotic) relationship between Sal and the much more experienced Dean, which is slowly evolving from hero worship to a more sober recognition of Dean’s basically egocentric outlook. For such a male-oriented film, On the Road features particularly strong performances from the females, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst.
