In the autumn of 1944, German SS soldiers massacred close to 800 civilians in the Italian small-town Marzabotto.
The events are seen through the eyes of a little girl, mute since her new-born brother died in her arms. She lives with her large family in a poor rural community, where a broad canvas is painted: partisans hiding in the forest, German patrols on the warpath and civilians trying to get by as best they can. The film’s first half carefully grounds the story in the prevalent social conditions, including religious strictness and a suspicion of anything modern. The beautifully shot film is told in a calm and thoughtful fashion, and when the drama begins the violence of this, even today, traumatic event is handled with discretion and respect.
