Nothing Personal

A woman removes her wedding ring and seeks total isolation as a wanderer through the beautiful West Irish landscape. But then she meets a man who promises not to ask her any personal questions if she will only stay for a while. Can two people live together without knowing anything about each other?
The basic theme of Nothing Personal is how deep a loneliness total freedom implies. The film’s intimate and tactile cinematography reveals the odd interplay between the protagonists, intensely embodied by Stephen Rea and Dutch actress Lotte Verbeek, who surprises with a wry and biting wit. The fact that the film was supposed to be shot in Holland is hard to imagine, as the heavy Irish landscape, with its great silence, works like the story’s third main character.
