AMERICAN POINT OF VIEW
How does the Americans film industry see the Nordic films and what is the
overall American impression of films from this region? What are the main
gate keepers to access the American market for the Nordic films? What kind
of different strategies can the producers of the films obtain to reach the
American market? High profile decision makers from US will share their
thoughts and knowledge with us.
Already confirmed panelists:
Michael Barker is the co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures
Classics (with Tom Bernard and Marcie Bloom), an autonomous division of
Sony Pictures Entertainment founded in January 1992. Sony Pictures Classics
distributes, produces, and acquires independent films from the United States
and around the world. The trio has worked with many of the world?s finest
independent filmmakers. Honors bestowed on his team and their films include
24 Academy Awards and 101 Academy Award nominations, including three for
Best Picture (Howards End, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Capote).
Christian Vesper is SVP of Acquisitions for IFC TV and Sundance
Channel. IFC Films is America?s leading entertainment company
devoted to American independent cinema, world cinema and documentary films
through production, theatrical distribution, exhibition and its television
network.

OSCAR WORKSHOP
Torene Svitil, who heads the Awards Office at the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, will present an informal workshop on the
rules for submitting films for Oscar® consideration in the Foreign Language,
Documentary and Short Film categories. During the workshop, she will answer
questions about the rules, the submission process and the voting procedures
for these categories. Copies of the rules and other relevant documents will
be available. The workshop will be of interest to international film
distributors, other film professionals and documentary and short film makers
and distributors.
Torene Svitil is the head of the Awards Office at the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Prior to accepting the Academy
position, she worked at the American Film Institute and at Universal City
Studios. The Awards Office administers submissions and voting for awards in
the Foreign Language Film, Short Film, Documentary Film, Animated Feature
Film, Writing and Makeup categories. In addition to the annual Academy
Awards competition, the Academy presents public programs, provides financial
support to film-related organizations, and collects, preserves and restores
films and historical materials.

NORDIC FILMMAKERS AND THE FUTURE OF THE ORIGINAL FILM
Directors´ guild of Norway, in cooperation with New Nordic Films, will
arrange a panel with focus on the ambitious contemporary film in the Nordic
countries today.
