During a temporary stay in Japan, American Pinkerton marries a geisha, Cio-Cio-San, to pleasantly pass the time until his departure. Banished from her family and society, the young woman now mother of Pinkerton’s child, patiently awaits her husband's return, unaware that he has remarried in America.
Adapted from David Belasco's play based on a short story by John Luther Long, Madame Butterfly touches the heart with its lush orchestration. Far from the traditional fans and cherry blossoms, director Robert Wilson uses stylized acting and a bare space to allow the melodic lines to blossom in all their purity.
Opera in 3 acts, sung in Italian.
