Yilmaz Erdogan's new feature film reconstructs the city of Zonguldak circa 1941 Yilmaz Erdogan worked on the storyline for his new film for eight years, with the shooting starting after a two-year pre-production period.
"The Butterfly's Dream" is based on the life stories of famous Zonguldak poets Rustu Onur and Muzaffer Tayyip Uslu, and it stars Yilmaz Erdogan, Kivanc Tatlitug, Belcim Bilgin, Mert Firat and Farah Zeynep Abdullah. The 1940s reflect the golden era of Turkish poets, and this film gives viewers perspective of that era.

The filming took place in Zonguldak and Istanbul, where the production crew prepared a 30,000 sq meter set to rebuild the cities during that period. The set was built in one year, and includes the Istanbul and Zonguldak city ports, city streets and buildings. The movie is one of the biggest productions in Turkish cinema industry, due to the meticulous two-year pre-production of the set and costumes. The art department also performed heavy research in order to accurately portray the atmosphere of the period, studying over 4,000 photographs and finalizing the outcome with hundreds of illustrations.

The shooting crew started the location selections in January 2012, in Istanbul, Heybeli Island and Zonguldak. As the locations were selected, the construction and preparation of the costumes and décor began.

Costume designer Gulumser Gurtunca and her crew prepared the costumes between March and September 2012, starting with character analysis and illustrations. They used 12 workshops and prepared over 7,000 costumes, accessories, shoes and hats. Some of necessary accessories were ordered from outside Turkey.

Art Director Hakan Yarkin and his crew started with the set decoration in Zonguldak, Istanbul and Heybeli Island on March 14, 2012. They reconstructed buildings, and produced the necessary props and accessories. The furniture and accessories were constructed from scratch. More than 20 cars, trucks, trains and buses were rented or produced.

The storyboard work was completed in one month.
A crew of 60 was hired for the post-production work. The head editor of the post-production team is Antoine Moulineau, who has worked in famous international projects such as Avatar, Clash of the Titans, The Dark Knights and Cloverfield.
